The film tells the story of Kamal Bhatnagar (Rajesh Khanna), a studious young man from a middle-class family who falls in love with Sunita (Mumtaz), a wealthy girl. They get married with the consent of their respective families and lead a happy life. Kamal also gets a house and a job with the help of his best friend, Mohan (Sanjeev Kumar). Mohan is a kind and jovial man but leads an unhappy life because of his shrewd and wicked wife.

Taking pity on him, Sunita befriends Mohan. Though Kamal ignores it at first, soon he starts to become jealous of Mohan and suspects that Sunita is having an affair with him. Later, when Mohan throws a party, Kamal finds Sunita with Mohan and becomes furious. Kamal questions Sunita and argues with her, but Sunita has no idea of what's happening and leaves to her parents' house.

Sunita's father also comes to try and talk sense into Kamal, but he refuses to listen. Sunita's mother persuades Sunita to go and talk to Kamal, but her father forbids her to go. Mohan comes and asks Sunita to tie a rakhi on him to help convince Kamal of their innocence, but her father rebuffs that idea too. He sends a divorce notice to Kamal in an attempt to make him come to them, but Kamal thinks it is a bluff and the divorce goes through. Sunita is heartbroken and is hospitalized.

One evening, Kamal sees a man jumping the fence between his and Mohan's property. He gives chase and catches the man who introduces himself as Suresh (Ranjeet). Suresh admits that he is having an affair with Mohan's wife and tells Kam al that Sunita is innocent and that he has never seen her with Mohan. Kamal realizes his mistake and feels guilty. He rushes to Sunita's house to apologize, but finds out that she has left for the airport to go abroad. He follows her to the airport and begs her to forgive him, but she refuses. She tells him that she is pregnant with his child and that she will never come back to him. She boards the plane and leaves.

Kamal is devastated and tries to kill himself, but Mohan saves him. Mohan tells Kamal that he has always loved Sunita as a sister and that he has never betrayed him. He also tells him that his wife has left him for Suresh and that he is going to divorce her. He advises Kamal to forget Sunita and move on with his life.

Years later, Kamal is a successful businessman and Mohan is a lawyer. They are still friends and live together. One day, they see Sunita's picture in a magazine and learn that she is a famous singer in London. They also see her son, who looks exactly like Kamal. Kamal decides to go to London to meet Sunita and his son, but Mohan tries to stop him. He tells him that Sunita is married to a rich man named Mr. Kapoor (Rehman) and that she is happy with her life.

Kamal does not listen and goes to London anyway. He meets Mr. Kapoor, who turns out to be Sunita's father-in-law. He tells Kamal that Sunita's husband died in a car accident and that he has been taking care of her and her son ever since. He also tells him that Sunita does not know that he is here and that he should not disturb her.

Kamal agrees, but secretly follows Sunita to her concert. He sees her singing on stage and is mesmerized by her voice. He also sees his son playing the guitar with her. He tries to approach them, but is stopped by the security guards. He manages to slip a note in Sunita's hand, asking her to meet him at a hotel.

Sunita reads the note and is shocked to see Kamal's name. She goes to the hotel, where Kamal is waiting for her. He tells her that he loves her and wants her back. He also tells her that he knows about their son and wants to be a father to him. He begs her to forgive him and give him another chance.
