What is the UEFA Nations League?

The UEFA Nations League is an international football competition that involves the men's national teams of the 55 member associations of UEFA, the governing body of European football. It was launched in 2018 as a replacement for most of the friendly matches that were played between European countries, with the aim of making them more competitive, meaningful, and exciting.

The format and structure of the competition

The 55 UEFA national teams are divided into four leagues, with Leagues A, B and C featuring 16 teams each, divided into four groups of four teams. League D features 7 teams divided into two groups, with one containing four teams and the other containing three. The teams are allocated to leagues based on their UEFA ranking.

Each team plays six matches within their group, using the home-and-away round-robin format. The group winners in Leagues B, C and D are promoted to a higher league, while the last-placed teams in Leagues A and B are relegated to a lower league. As League C has four groups while League D has only two, the two League C teams that are relegated are determined by play-offs.

In the top division, League A, teams compete to become the UEFA Nations League champions. The four group winners of League A qualify for the Nations League Finals, which are played in a knockout format, consisting of the semi-finals, third place play-off and final. The host country is selected among the four qualified teams by UEFA, and the winners of the final are crowned as the Nations League champions.

The benefits and objectives of the tournament

The UEFA Nations League has several benefits and objectives for both UEFA and its member associations. Some of them are:

  • It provides more competitive and attractive matches for fans, players, coaches and media.

  • It increases the quality and standing of national team football in Europe.

  • It reduces the number of meaningless friendlies that often lack intensity and interest.

  • It offers an alternative route to qualify for the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, as some places are reserved for the best-performing teams in each league.

  • It creates more opportunities for smaller nations to play against stronger opponents and improve their ranking and development.

  • It generates more revenue and exposure for UEFA and its member associations through broadcasting and sponsorship deals.

How did the 2020-21 edition end?

The second edition of the UEFA Nations League took place in 2020-21, amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite some postponements and cancellations, most of the matches were played as scheduled, with some adjustments to health protocols and travel restrictions.

The group stage results and standings

The group stage was played from September to November 2020, with some thrilling matches and surprising results. Here are some of the highlights:

  • In League A, France topped Group A ahead of defending champions Portugal and World Cup holders Germany, while Spain edged out Switzerland and Ukraine on goal difference in Group B. Italy won all six of their games in Group C, while Belgium did the same in Group D, setting up a mouth-watering clash with France in the semi-finals.

  • In League B, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Wales secured promotion to League A, while Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Northern Ireland and Slovakia were relegated to League C. Scotland missed out on promotion after losing to Israel on penalties in their final game.

  • In League C, Albania, Armenia, Montenegro and Slovenia moved up to League B, while Estonia, Cyprus, Kazakhstan and Moldova dropped down to League D. North Macedonia topped their group but failed to clinch promotion after losing to Kosovo in a play-off.

  • In League D, the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar earned promotion to League C after winning their respective groups. The Faroe Islands won all four of their games, while Gibraltar secured their first ever competitive victories against San Marino and Liechtenstein.

The finals and the champions

The finals were originally scheduled for June 2021, but were postponed to October 2021 due to the rescheduling of UEFA EURO 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The host country was Italy, with the matches played at the San Siro in Milan and the Juventus Stadium in Turin.
